I had a similar issue on a set of computers in a far-flung branch several weeks ago. The issue had to do with the file server directing computers to cache the contents of shared folders. If the computer and file server became out of sync somehow, the users wouldn't be able to open or, in some cases, even see certain files. The trick is that the folder they were looking at was three levels down from the shared folder. Caching takes place on that top-level folder, so you'll need to look for the following settings at that level and have everything below it inherit its settings. Have the affected computers reboot and try again.
